Your own PC or cloud for PayCryptos?

Your own PC or cloud for PayCryptos?

The one who has secret keys owns the cryptocurrency. The only thing left is to find out where to put these keys. All PayCryptos users have faced this case, while building their security architecture.

Why do you still have to make a choice?

PayCryptos is a software and not a web-service; it should be kept somewhere. For this, you need an OS, hard drive, and a set of tools and technical requirements. To be precise, those are the following:

  • Core i5/i7, RAM 16-32Gb, SSD 500Gb;
  • Archiver;
  • Any OS should have GUI (graphical user interface);
  • Free desktop environment – lxde or xfce;
  • Java version 1.8 64 bit;
  • For Linux: Debian 10/11/clones, Ubuntu 20.04.2/6 LTS. Not recommended – Linux on the redhat base.

Currently, such infrastructure for working with cryptocurrency in the business area can be built in three ways:

Own resources:

  • A home PC, perhaps, a laptop (if you have a home office);
  • Dedicated server in office infrastructure;

Cloud:

  • A virtual server (VDS);

Nothing else can be found for economically feasible money. Now let us talk about the factors that should influence your choice.

Pros and cons of your own infrastructure:

Pros:

  • 100% guarantee that you own secret keys.
  • Technical possibility to turn wallets into cold ones by disconnecting from the Internet during non-working hours.
  • Savings, if you already have a computer, not necessarily the most powerful one.

Cons:

  • The cost of purchasing equipment to carry over the life of the business can often exceed the monthly subscription to a cloud solution.
  • Lack of digital hygiene can lead to problems with viruses and loss of private keys.
  • Social engineering hacks are more likely, simply because home or small office environments have a less developed cybersecurity culture.
  • If you have a small business and do not have an IT administrator, it will be more difficult for you to periodically maintain your own device.

On cloud solutions:

Pros:

  • A simple and cheap entry threshold, it is enough to pay for the first subscription month.
  • Technical support available and ready to help.
  • Possibility for quick technical upgrade.
  • Costs are only for the duration of use. No need to buy equipment.

Cons:

  • If you forget about the subscription payment, you lose the secret keys.
  • You are dependent on third-parties, cryptocurrency secret keys are not kept by the owner.
  • Internet issues or a global failure can deny you access to the money.
  • In the long-term perspective, a cloud is less economically reasonable than your own equipment.

From €1000 is the price of your own PC with the configurations specified above.

From €50 per month is the price for the cloud subscription.

There is no such thing as an ideal option. For each business and case, the choice can vary.
