USDT: on which blockchain do I use it? Pros and cons

USDT: on which blockchain do I use it? Pros and cons

The choice of means of payment should always begin with an assessment of the credibility of the issuer of money..

USD issuer – the USA Federal Reserve.

If you use the dollar, you trust the USA Federal Reserve.

When we are trying to find out on which blockchain to use USDT, the primary dilemma is what company do we trust the most? The secondary one is whether we trust the USDT currency, which, in fact, is issued by a commercial non-public organization.

But that is another topic and has nothing to do with the current choice issue.

A bit of theory

USDT is one of the Tether token names which is issued by the Tether Limited company.

Each 1 USDT is backed by 1 US dollar.

The US dollars are invested into various conservative assets, for instance, in the US government debt bonds to ensure that US dollars on collateral are not subject to inflation.

All USDTs which are issued by an emitter are placed in smart contracts of different blockchains. The following are among them, according to the official source:

  • Tron
  • Ethereum
  • Solana
  • Omni
  • Avalanche
  • Tezos
  • Kava
  • EOS
  • Assets
  • Liquid
  • Algorand
  • Polkadot
  • Near
  • SLP
  • Kusama
  • Polygon

Selecting a blockchain to work with USDT

Besides the trust factor, you need to evaluate the following:

  • Time period for which you will keep your money in USDT.
  • Transaction speed.
  • Transfer fee.

If cryptocurrency for you is a way to transfer money from one part of the world to another and then withdraw it into cash, meanwhile you do not intend to materially store the money in the blockchain for weeks, months, or years, you can safely select any network.

Risks of a non-working blockchain for a short period of time are almost reduced to zero. You have to be “very lucky” that at the moment your money is in a blockchain, it ceases to exist or work.

Speaking of transaction speed, it is worth mentioning that the fastest blockchain among all supported is Solana. Transactions are carried out almost immediately.

However, if you want to select another blockchain for any reason, your transactions will be processed timely, and the difference in funds transfer speed can be measured in seconds you would hardly notice.

Perhaps, the leading factor when choosing a blockchain for Tether is the fee amount. The exact fee amount cannot be calculated and compared, since, in most blockchains, it depends on the Gas/Energy amount and similar indicators.

However, currently USDT is frequently transferred via the Tron network, due to the lowest commission. Perhaps that is why the largest amount of USDT assets is concentrated in the smart contract of the Tron network on the official site tether.to.

Finally, let us return to the trust factor. Which blockchain out of all of these can you trust the most? If we are to rely on the company capitalization, then Ethereum is the most reputable one.

Make your choice and keep in mind the diversification rule, so that you will not keep all eggs in one basket.
